What It Is

Generic Name

Liraglutide

Medication Class

GLP-1 receptor agonist

Receptor Target

GLP-1 receptor

Liraglutide is a medication that activates the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor. It influences appetite, satiety, gastric emptying, and glucose regulation. Liraglutide products are administered differently from some other GLP-1 medications — consult your prescriber or pharmacist for administration guidance specific to your prescription.

Common Brand Names

SaxendaApproved for chronic weight management in appropriate patients.
VictozaApproved for type 2 diabetes and certain cardiovascular-risk indications.

Saxenda and Victoza both contain liraglutide but carry different FDA-approved indications. Your prescriber determines which, if any, is appropriate for you.

What It Is Approved For

Saxenda is approved for chronic weight management in adults and certain adolescents who meet specific criteria. Victoza is approved for the management of type 2 diabetes and has additional cardiovascular-risk-related indications. Even though both products contain liraglutide, their approved indications differ. The same active ingredient can carry different approved uses depending on the brand.

How It Works

Liraglutide mimics a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1 that is released after eating. It activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and digestive system, which can slow gastric emptying, reduce appetite signals, increase feelings of fullness, and support glucose regulation. It is not a stimulant or a fat burner — it works through hormone signaling pathways.

Commonly Reported Side Effects

Based on current FDA labeling, commonly reported side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Decreased appetite
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

This is not a complete list. Refer to current prescribing information and speak with your healthcare professional about side effects specific to your situation.

Important Warnings

Current FDA labeling for liraglutide products includes warnings related to thyroid C-cell tumors (observed in animal studies; human relevance is unknown), pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, hypoglycemia in certain patients, heart rate increase, renal impairment, and suicidal behavior or ideation. This is a summary only. Consult current prescribing information and your prescriber for the full warnings applicable to your specific medication and health history.

What This Means for Your Training

Liraglutide can affect how you feel during training. Here is what to keep in mind:

  • Reduced appetite may make it harder to meet daily protein targets — focus on protein-containing foods at each meal.
  • Weight reduction can include changes in lean muscle mass — resistance training helps preserve the strength you have built.
  • Nausea or fatigue may affect workout timing — adjust your schedule around how you feel, especially after dose changes.
  • Energy levels may vary — use your readiness check-in to guide training intensity.
  • Hydration is especially important — aim for consistent daily water intake.
  • Track your strength benchmarks and body measurements — consistent monitoring helps you see the full picture of your progress.
