What It Is

Generic Name

Semaglutide

Medication Class

GLP-1 receptor agonist

Receptor Target

GLP-1 receptor

Semaglutide is a medication that acts on the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor. It can influence appetite, satiety, gastric emptying, and glucose regulation. It is available in injectable and oral forms depending on the brand.

Common Brand Names

WegovyApproved for chronic weight management in appropriate patients; also has cardiovascular indications.
OzempicPrimarily approved for type 2 diabetes; also has cardiovascular-risk-related indications.
RybelsusAn oral form approved for type 2 diabetes.

These brand names are not interchangeable. Each carries distinct FDA-approved indications. Your prescriber determines which, if any, is appropriate for you.

What It Is Approved For

FDA-approved indications vary by brand. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents who meet specific criteria, and has additional cardiovascular indications. Ozempic and Rybelsus are primarily approved for the management of type 2 diabetes, with additional cardiovascular-risk-related indications depending on the product. The same active ingredient can carry different approved uses depending on the brand and formulation.

How It Works

Semaglutide mimics a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1 that is released after eating. It activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and digestive system, which can slow gastric emptying, reduce appetite signals, increase feelings of fullness, and support glucose regulation. It is not a stimulant or a fat burner — it works through hormone signaling pathways.

Commonly Reported Side Effects

Based on current FDA labeling, commonly reported side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Decreased appetite

This is not a complete list. Refer to current prescribing information and speak with your healthcare professional about side effects specific to your situation.

Important Warnings

Current FDA labeling for semaglutide products includes warnings related to thyroid C-cell tumors (observed in animal studies; human relevance is unknown), pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, hypoglycemia in certain patients, acute kidney injury, diabetic retinopathy complications, heart rate increase, and suicidal behavior or ideation. This is a summary only. Consult current prescribing information and your prescriber for the full warnings applicable to your specific medication and health history.

What This Means for Your Training

Semaglutide can affect how you feel during training. Here is what to keep in mind:

  • Reduced appetite may make it harder to meet daily protein and calorie targets — prioritize protein-containing foods at each meal.
  • Rapid weight reduction can include changes in lean muscle mass, not just fat — resistance training helps preserve the muscle you have built.
  • Nausea or GI discomfort may affect workout timing — adjust your schedule around how you feel, especially after dose changes.
  • Energy levels may fluctuate — use your readiness check-in to guide training intensity.
  • Hydration becomes especially important — aim for consistent daily water intake.
  • Track your strength numbers — if lifts are declining significantly, flag this in your weekly check-in.
